Picos de Europa

Friday 3rd

Another day in the towering Picos.  We parked up at Poncebos and walked for just over an hour along the well known Cares Gorge walk – the steepest part! To say it was impressive is an understatement! The path was created when a  water transport system for hydro power was literally carved out of, and through the rock. You can still see some of the open channels. It was completed in 1925 at the cost of 45 lives lost. The sun was shining and it was an incredible 29 deg C – in October?

only way is up.....

go away - I've eaten it all!

incredible path in the distance

We sat and had lunch accompanied by an inquisitive goat herd.

That evening we stayed at a site in nearby Avin which was very nice and nearly empty!

Sat 4th

Covadonga! What a name for a very important religious site. The Santa Cueva is a cave where the the Virgin Mary supposedly appeared  to warriors before  a battle in AD722. The pool below the cave is supposed to ensure marriage within one year to women who drink from it. Tina left the cave very thirsty…………

The lakes 10km above are beautiful and the road up has to be seen to be believed. We parked up at the bottom and scooted up as the Saturday drivers were terrible and very selfish when confronted by the van. We overtook several cars on the way up. J What a great place. The old iron ore mine was also worthwhile exploring with amazing rock formations.

scoot made it!
