Umbria - Valerina Valley

Tues 3rd & Weds 4th June

After finding our way out of Ancona (no easy task) we were heading for Preci and Il Collaccio a campsite on the edge of the Mt Sibillini national park. I had chosen this purely as the area looked green and hilly on the map!

What a find - the mountains and hillsides were still very green and lush, the roads were narrow and twisted their way alongside the river. The road surfaces in Umbria however were absolutely appalling, easily the worst of the trip so far. Potholes galore that had been crudely filled.  Even the autostrada we had used briefly was knackered - we resorted to weaving around the holes  after following a truck and wondering what he was doing all over the road.

The approach road to the site was uphill and the last bit passed down through a very narrow street. Breathe in!  The site had a fantastic pool with an amazing panoramic view. We squeezed into a pitch with great views down the valley. The campsite is very big in area but only has 100 pitches with cabins hidden away on the many terraces. A truly lovely, relaxing place.

lovely and cool!

After a cool swim we just chilled out by the pool. Meal that night was a yummy take away pizza. We were in bed and asleep by 10pm, worn out by the ferry trip and the heat.  Incredibly we slept until 8.20am. Over the obligatory morning cup of tea in bed (Tina has now had 65 cups of tea brought to her in bed!) we decided to stay another night to explore this lovely area.

So scoot out and a leisurely but very scenic ride into Norcia - surely the truffle centre of Italy. I have never seen so many stuffed wild boar's heads mounted on walls.  It was a very pleasant  town with a huge plazza. Most definitely an area to return to and explore further.

  1. Must have been nice to see the 'green' again after Croatia.
